Northern Beaches: 5 Dog-Friendly Walks and Beaches

Over the past few weekends, my dog and I have been exploring different corners of the Northern Beaches. Every trip left us with the same thought:

People here seem happy... but the dogs might be even happier.

Northern Beaches: 5 Dog-Friendly Walks and Beaches

Think off-leash beaches, endless waterfront trails, huge grassy reserves, calm lagoons, and coastal lookouts. It feels like every suburb has another beautiful place where dogs can run, sniff, swim, and simply enjoy being dogs.

If you're looking for new adventures with your furry mate, here are five dog-friendly spots in Sydney's Northern Beaches that deserve a place on your weekend list.

Northern Beaches: 5 Dog-Friendly Walks and Beaches

🐾 1. Bayview Dog Beach & Rowland Reserve

If we had to pick one spot that perfectly captures the Northern Beaches lifestyle, this would be it.

Bayview Dog Beach is one of Sydney's best off-leash dog beaches, with calm Pittwater waters that are perfect for dogs who love swimming. The beach connects seamlessly with Rowland Reserve, a huge grassy area where dogs can run, chase balls, and make new friends.

What makes this place special isn't just the dogs.

On a typical afternoon you'll find people fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, cycling, or simply sitting by the water enjoying the sunshine. Everyone seems to be doing their own thing, yet somehow it all feels connected.

Why dogs love it:

Off-leash beach access

Calm and shallow water

Large grassy reserve

Friendly local dog community

Good to know:

Large car park available

First hour of parking is free

Plenty of space even on busy weekends

🌿 2. Narrabeen Lagoon Trail

The Narrabeen Lagoon Trail is one of Sydney's most iconic dog-friendly walks for a reason.

This scenic loop circles the lagoon, taking you through boardwalks, bushland, lakeside paths, and peaceful waterfront sections. The scenery changes constantly, which keeps both humans and dogs engaged the entire way.

It's long enough to feel like a proper adventure, yet flat enough for dogs of all ages.

Why dogs love it:

Endless new scents and scenery

Beautiful water views

Wide walking paths

Great for long, steady walks

Best for:

Dogs with energy to burn and owners who enjoy slow, scenic exploration.

🌊 3. Freshwater to Curl Curl Coastal Walk

If you're chasing ocean views, this coastal walk delivers.

The route between Freshwater and Curl Curl combines dramatic coastline scenery with relaxed beachside vibes. Sea breezes, crashing waves, and open skies make it one of those walks that instantly clears your head.

Along the way you'll find plenty of spots to pause, take photos, and let your dog enjoy the coastal air.

Why dogs love it:

Coastal scents everywhere

Plenty to see and explore

Nearby dog-friendly areas and reserves

Best for:

Weekend walks when both you and your pup want a dose of ocean therapy.

⛰️ 4. Long Reef Headland Walk

There are plenty of beautiful coastal walks in Sydney, but Long Reef always feels a little different.

The headland offers sweeping views across the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, rolling green spaces, and one of the most spectacular outlooks on the Northern Beaches.

On a clear day you can see for kilometres.

While your dog enjoys the fresh sea air and grassy paths, you'll probably spend half your time stopping for photos.

Why dogs love it:

Open grassy spaces

Constant ocean breeze

Plenty of interesting smells

Best for:

Sunrise walks, sunset walks, and anyone who appreciates a great view.

⚓ 5. Manly Wharf to North Harbour Reserve

For a gentler stroll, it's hard to beat this harbour-side route.

This walk combines beautiful water views with a relaxed local atmosphere. Boats drift past, families picnic in the parks, and the harbour sparkles almost everywhere you look.

The highlight is North Harbour Reserve, where many local dog owners gather for relaxed weekend outings.

Why dogs love it:

Easy walking terrain

Open grassy areas

Plenty of social opportunities

Best for:

A casual weekend adventure without committing to a long hike.

❤️ Why We Keep Coming Back to the Northern Beaches

The more time we spend in the Northern Beaches, the more we realise it isn't just about the scenery.

It's the lifestyle.

Nobody seems rushed.

People are fishing, paddling, walking, cycling, throwing tennis balls for their dogs, or simply sitting by the water doing absolutely nothing.

And honestly, that's what makes these places so special.

You don't need a packed itinerary.

You don't need a major attraction.

Sometimes the perfect day is simply watching your dog sprint across a beach, roll in the grass, and fall asleep in the car on the drive home.

The Northern Beaches has mastered that kind of happiness.

And after a few weekends exploring the area, we're starting to understand why the locals don't seem too eager to tell everyone about it.

Happy exploring, fellow paw parents. 🐾
