Shale Hills Fenced Dog Park

Shale Hills Fenced Dog Park is the largest fully-fenced off-leash dog area in the Western Sydney Parklands, spread across five hectares of purpose-built rolling grass — not just a mown paddock. It is managed by the Greater Sydney Parklands (Liverpool City Council LGA) and has rapidly become one of Western Sydney's most-loved dog parks thanks to its thoughtful layout, real agility equipment and double-gated security.

The park is split into TWO completely separate, fully fenced enclosures — this is its signature feature. A large main area (for medium to large dogs) contains a full agility course with concrete tunnels, balance beams, rest boxes and weave poles, plus a self-guided 10-station training circuit for skills like sit, stay, controlled walking and recall. A dedicated, fully independent small-dog enclosure gives puppies, seniors, shy or small breeds a safe zone to run free without being bowled over by zoomies. Inside both zones you'll also find a sensory garden planted with dog-safe lavender, thyme, chamomile and mint for curious noses to work through.

Amenities inside the double-gated entry include dog-height and human-height drinking fountains, poo-bag dispensers at multiple points, and a shaded terrace with bench seating under umbrellas for human supervision. Note: there are NO public toilets on-site at the dog park itself; the nearest are a 5 minute drive away at Carnes Hill Marketplace.

Tips
CRITICAL RULE — Shale Hills is FULLY FENCED but has DOUBLE-GATED entries: ALWAYS close both gates behind you when entering or leaving; never open both gates simultaneously or dogs can escape onto Second Ave. No more than 4 dogs per person inside the enclosures; ensure vaccinations (including C5) are up to date, and clean up immediately using the bins and poo bags provided — bins are at the entry terrace and at the far end of the main agility course. Dogs in season, declared dangerous/menacing breeds, or unregistered dogs are prohibited from the entire park by Liverpool City Council rangers (random checks can happen on weekends). The main big-dog agility tunnel and weave poles get VERY popular after 9am on Sat/Sun — arrive before 8am for a quiet session if you have a nervous or reactive dog. NO TOILETS on-site — use Carnes Hill Marketplace facilities (5 min drive via Cowpasture Rd) BEFORE you arrive. The car park gate auto-locks at the posted closing time (6pm standard / 8pm DST) — if you are still inside the park when it locks you will have to walk out via the pedestrian gate and leave your car overnight until the gate reopens at 6am. After summer sunset the park has solar night lighting along the main paths and entry terrace, so late afternoon/early evening visits after a hot day are pleasant. For additional walking afterwards, the wider Western Sydney Parklands trails are accessible directly from the car park (on-leash required outside the fenced dog park).
