Sirius Cove Reserve Beach
Sirius Cove Reserve is a sheltered 250-metre harbour beach tucked into the southwestern corner of Mosman in Little Sirius Cove, a short drive below Taronga Zoo and a 40 minute ferry ride from Circular Quay to nearby Mosman Wharf. The beach faces east across Sydney Harbour towards the Opera House and the city skyline, catching soft morning light and staying largely protected from southerly busters by the headlands at Bradley's and Cremorne Point. The reserve carries a quiet layer of Sydney art history: the sheltered bay was the site of the famous Curlew Camp artists' colony in the 1890s and early 1900s, where painters Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts and Charles Conder lived and worked before it was converted to public parkland, and heritage interpretation signs along the reserve entry pathway explain the camp layout and their painting techniques.
Dog access at Sirius Cove is split by Mosman Council into weekday and weekend time windows, consistent with the surrounding Cremorne and Mosman harbour reserve rules. Mondays to Fridays – including public holidays that fall on weekdays – the entire beach and grassed reserve picnic area is open to fully off-leash exercise from midnight to midnight, giving dogs uninterrupted access to the sand, water and lawn. On Saturdays, Sundays and any public holidays observed on a weekend, off-leash access is restricted to two narrow windows only: before 9:00 in the morning, and again after 4:00 in the afternoon, with strict on-leash enforcement from 9am to 4pm when the reserve becomes heavily used by families, swimming groups, wedding parties and the nearby children's playground users.
Facilities inside the reserve include a brick toilet and shower block at the uphill entrance off Sirius Cove Road, a fenced toddler playground with shade sails, around 20 covered timber picnic tables with attached steel electric barbecues, multiple shaded bench seats, council water taps and rubbish bins spaced along the sand access path, and a designated kayak and paddleboard storage rack at the northern end of the beach. Several well-maintained on-leash bush walking tracks start from the back of the reserve and climb uphill through Sydney Harbour Federation Trust parkland to Taronga Zoo's main entrance and the Bradley's Head amphitheatre, perfect for extending an early-morning off-leash beach session into a longer scenic loop after clipping the leash back on at 9am on weekends.
