Bayview Dog Beach (Rowland Reserve)
Bayview Dog Beach and the adjacent Rowland Reserve grasslands together form one of the Northern Beaches largest and most loved fully off-leash dog precincts, sitting on the tranquil western shore of Pittwater directly opposite the Newport headland and the eastern Ku-ring-gai Chase escarpment. The combined reserve wraps around a long narrow sand spit that pushes out into Pittwater at low tide, exposing hundreds of metres of additional sand flats where dogs can run, dig and play fetch in the shallows for hours without needing to backtrack up onto the lawn. The water inside the spit is almost lake-calm because of the protective Pittwater embayment, making it one of the safest open-water swimming spots in Sydney for puppies learning to swim, senior arthritic dogs and even breeds that do not normally love getting their paws wet.
Council maps treat Rowland Reserve and Bayview Dog Beach as a single unified off-leash exercise area open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with no seasonal restrictions and no weekend or public holiday time limits. The whole precinct is unfenced, so reliable recall is essential because the northern end of the spit opens out directly onto the main Pittwater boat channel where cruisers, ferries and kayaks pass regularly. The grassed Rowland Reserve lawn area back from the water is dotted with mature Norfolk pines and coastal banksia trees that provide reliable shade for midday picnics, and the reserve entrance runs a weekend mobile dog wash van that is a favourite with local owners after a long morning of sand and saltwater play.
Amenities within the combined reserve include public toilet blocks at the northern car park entrance, cold outdoor showers and two council-operated dog rinsing stations at the main access points onto the sand, rubbish and poo bag bins positioned every 50 metres along the main path, and shaded timber bench seats looking back across Pittwater towards the Barrenjoey Head lighthouse visible through the heads on a clear day. The reserve also connects to the paved Bayview to Church Point Shared Path along Pittwater Road for a longer on-leash warm-up walk before heading onto the off-leash beach area. Boats can be anchored temporarily in the shallow channel just off the end of the spit for owners arriving by water, though the jetty itself is reserved for the adjacent Rowland Reserve sailing club members.
