Rose Bay Dog Friendly Beach

Rose Bay Dog Friendly Beach is a picturesque Eastern Suburbs harbour shoreline divided by Woollahra Council into three clearly signed zones, running north from near Rose Bay Ferry Wharf along the foreshore past Percival Park and Dumaresq Road. The water is sheltered and shallow close to shore, making it one of the gentlest harbour entries in the east for puppies learning to swim and senior dogs who want a calm dip without ocean surf. Sydney Ferries and catamarans glide past constantly, and on a clear afternoon you can see straight through to the Harbour Bridge pylons at Milsons Point and back to the city skyline behind the Royal Botanic Garden headland.

Zone 1 – the northernmost sandy stretch between Percival Park and the Dumaresq Road groyne (sometimes called the Foreshore Dog Beach) – is the fully off-leash area, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a soft sand spit that emerges at low tide for extra running space. Zone 2 runs south from the Dumaresq groyne towards the park lawns of Rose Bay Park and is a timed off-leash corridor: dogs are welcome off-leash between 4:30pm in the afternoon and 8:30am the following morning, with on-leash enforcement during the middle of the day when families and swimmers use the area most heavily. Zone 3 – the grassy Rose Bay Park lawns and Bellamy Beach promenade beside the cafe strip – remains on-leash at all times, and rangers patrol the boundary between Zone 2 and Zone 3 regularly during summer weekends.

Amenities along the stretch include public toilets and outdoor cold showers at Percival Park, water taps near the groyne, and shaded bench seats back from the water line. A short two-minute walk uphill from the shore takes you to the Rose Bay cafe and deli strip on Newcastle Street for post-swim coffee and pet-friendly outdoor brunch tables. The bay seagrass beds occasionally wash up puffer fish and other toxic marine life after storms, so always do a quick visual sweep of the sand before letting your dog off to explore.

Tips
Always confirm you are inside the signed Zone 1 or Zone 2 corridors before unclipping the leash, because the transition from timed on-leash to 24-7 off-leash happens at the Dumaresq Road groyne and rangers issue on-the-spot infringement notices for dogs wandering across the line. Parking is the biggest bottleneck on weekends: arrive before 9am or after 5pm to find a spot within 5 minutes walk, or skip driving altogether and catch the F7 ferry from Circular Quay to Rose Bay Wharf. Dead puffer fish, sea urchins and blue bottles sometimes wash in on the southerly tide, so scan the tide line before letting dogs run freely and carry a small towel to wipe salt and sand off paws before getting back in the car. If you want a longer circuit, combine the beach with the paved Rose Bay Foreshore Shared Path heading north towards Point Piper for a flat 2.5 kilometre loop that stays on-lead beside the ferry wharf.
